There’s nothing better than Summertime in Chicago! But unfortunately, summer is coming to an end. I know; I can’t believe it, either. If you missed out on a summer vacation, don’t worry! The Blume Group has compiled a list of the best outdoor getaways for you and the family to enjoy. And the best part is that they’re all relatively close to Chicago!

I like a mix of loud and laidback:
I have been traveling to Lake Geneva my entire life, and I will never get sick of it! Downtown Lake Geneva is a must-see because of the boutique shopping, exciting bars, and charming chocolate shops. But I also love venturing to the other beaches too, specifically Fontana Beach. I definitely recommend staying at The Abbey Resort because of the great recreational activities, fun nightlife, and spa services. Plus, you’re within walking distance of Chuck’s Lakeside Tavern & they have the yummiest cheeseburgers. Here’s Lake Geneva’s Tourism site for more information.
When you’re heading out of town for a weekend, would you rather go on fun adventures or enjoy some peaceful relaxation? Good news, The Indiana Dunes have both! You can fly kites on the sandy beach, walk up to 50 miles of rugged trails, or sight-see while horseback riding. Of course, you can also bird-watch, identify beautiful wildflowers, and swim in Lake Michigan. Additional info can be found here.

Sera’s local adventurous picks:
One of our Agents, Sera, is a self-proclaimed mermaid, so Silver Spray in Chicago is highly recommended. In 1914, a wooden ship called Silver Spray was cruising through the shallow waters of Lake Michigan when it hit rock bottom. 100 years later, the ship’s bits and pieces, including the iron boiler, are still there, and you can see it whenever you want, weather permitting. It should be noted that you do not have to be dive-certified to enjoy this experience because many people snorkel. Here’s more information.
Looking for another adrenaline rush? Check out First Ascent! Let’s face it, going to a “normal” gym is sometimes intimidating and boring. First Ascent is not a “normal” gym in that regard. They focus on community amongst members, variety in activities, and progressing your personal goals. Feel free to do a standard workout, try a yoga class, do some rock climbing or take the kids to a youth class! Plus, there are 4 locations in the Chicago area, which makes things super convenient… More info here.

Lisa loves a beach oasis:
Saugatuck/Douglas, Michigan, is a beautiful beach town just southwest of Grand Rapids. Conde Nast Traveler’s actually dubbed Saugatuck as one of the Top 25 beaches in the world, which makes sense because it covers miles of Lake Michigan’s shoreline. There are lots of places to shop, eat and explore, but Lisa loves outdoor activities too. Lisa & her daughter love the dunes at Saugatuck Harbor Natural area, the trails at Saugatuck Dunes State Park, and the hiking at Mt. Baldhead. And the best part is that it’s less than a 3-hour drive from Chicago, which makes for a perfect long weekend getaway. More information about this picturesque town can be found here.
Honestly, who doesn’t love Door County, Wisconsin? It has everything! Unique shops, amazing food, beautiful apple orchards, and of course, spectacular views. Lisa looks forward to Door County vacations because she can shop for new arts and crafts! She has created and even welded some of her favorite pieces at Hands On Art Studio, and she can’t wait to add them to her collection soon! If you need a place to stay, Lisa highly recommends Gordon Lodge. The lodge rests on 130 acres of quiet forests and tranquil beaches, which is the perfect contrast to city life in Chicago. General information about Door County can be found here.
